The Mill Valley Historical Society was formed in 1977 with the primary purpose of educating the community about local history, via our publications, events and other activities.
The Society organizes and co-sponsors together with the Mill Valley Public Library a series of First Wednesday Programs on topics of historical interest.
The Society also publishes the Mill Valley Historical Review, an annual magazine featuring articles and photographs on subjects related to Mill Valley history.
On the Sunday of every Memorial Day weekend, the Society stages a Walk into History, commemorating the anniversary of the 1890 land auction that initiated the development of Mill Valley. Each year a different part of Mill Valley is highlighted on a short walking tour led by trained guides. A guidebook is provided for each walk, and you can view the more recent ones on our History Walk Guidebooks page.
The Mill Valley Historical Society Oral History Committee preserves memories of Mill Valley's past by conducting taped interviews of long-time Mill Valley residents, and then transcribes and edits them. The tapes are available for listening in
the History Room, and the transcripts are available for checkout at the Mill Valley Public Library.
An excellent resource for information about Mill Valley's past is the Lucretia Hanson Little History Room. The History Room contains a growing collection of historical materials about Mill Valley and its environs, including old photographs, newspapers on microfilm dating back almost a century, more than one hundred oral histories and other historical memorabilia. The History Room is domiciled and managed by the Mill Valley Public Library. It is staffed by volunteer docents, most of whom are Historical Society members, who are available to assist visitors and answer questions.
In addition, the Lucretia Little History Room of the Mill Valley Public Library has provided 200 images of Mill Valley to the Online Archive of California.
The Mill Valley Historical Society is a non-profit organization of about 500 members. Officers and Board Members are elected at the annual dinner meeting in October.
