In 1866 Samuel Throckmorton, developer of Rancho Saucelito, built a hunting lodge on a site that was later bounded by Linden Lane, Ethel Avenue and Montford Avenue, and named it The Homestead. This structure was the source of the name given to the unincorporated area of Mill Valley known as Homestead Valley.

Long-time Homestead Valley resident Chuck Oldenburg writes a monthly column for the Homestead Headlines, the newsletter of the Homestead Valley Neighborhood Association. The column, called Homestead Valley History Notes, contains nuggets of historical information that Chuck has mined during his many years in the area.

The Homestead Valley Community Association has published a booklet, "History of Homestead Valley," containing a complete set of the 75 one-page articles Chuck wrote for the Homestead Headlines from April 2000 to June 2006. Copies can be purchased for $15 at the Homestead Valley Community Center, 315 Montford Ave. For more information see www.homesteadvalley.org.

In July 2006, Chuck changed the format from articles to historical photographs with accompanying descriptions. Chuck sends these articles and photographs to us monthly, and they are reprinted on our site. New columns/photos are added as received. If you have comments or questions about any these or other topics pertaining to the history of Homestead Valley, please e-mail Chuck Oldenburg.
